The sun is shining and it is officially hot, hot, hot!! What else is turning up the heat? These slim and stylish tanks I found for outdoor running, workout classes and anywhere no-straps-required.
My first is a bit pricey, but for the money you get an acid-wash style that is American Apparel meets top fit gear. I found it first on the Women’s Health Pinterest board, which is worth a look (or five) because it’s stacked with cool gear as well as fit tips. Like the tank below, from NUX.
The tank comes in a variety of colors. I love the light blue!
Also, another sporty tank on the other side of the $$$ spectrum is this GoDry Tank from Old Navy. It’s under $20 and just as bright.
The website actually offers a variety of affordable active wear from yoga pants to a rainbow array of sports bras.
Another find was ATHLETA, which is also a GAP brand. They carry the best overall selection by far. I love this red tank with the ruched sides — it adds flare without subtracting function.
Although ATHLETICA is pricier than its sister company Old Navy, the tanks use better fabrics and offer more choices.
The plethora of colors, styles and cuteness offered on their site had me even more tankful than usual.
For guys this time I found a black Under Armour tank while shopping on the Finish Line website.
It’s fitted without losing its masculinity and simple enough to be thrown on with any old pair of gym shorts. Plus, it is under $25.
This tank is sold in black or white so guys can avoid heat stroke while hitting the bike trails!
For a cool layering effect shop Nike. Their main image right now shows an example of pairing a bright colored sports bra with a loser tank in a contrasting color. This definitely draws the eye as runners speed past.
Those who favor running under the radar will find super cute tops also, whether they hide or show their sports bra. There’s even a guide to fitting the right sports bra for you.
I love this tank’s side pocket and stripey design, but if stripes scare you skinny it comes in plain colors, too.
Checkout the Nike Lookbook for more fit fashion ideas.
Cute tanks are all over campus both inside and outside the gym, so beat the heat and go sleeveless today.
Roll the tapes to find actors and actresses workin’ the bods they rock WHILE looking good doing it.
These are some of my favorite movie workout moments filled with Fit Fashion divas.
My favorite, of course is the bimbo bicycling scene of the two blonde ambition protagonists in Romi and Michelle’s High School Reunion. Notice that their formal gym up-dos are fabulous.
Yes, the girls did overdo it with the glam, but the bling leads me to remember my favorite be-jewled yoga pants from Victoria Secret’s PINK, where bling shines high to the max.
Next, from a Suzanne Summer’s era classic an over sized sweatshirt goes a long way in Flashdance.
Steal the look and throw on a shoulder-showing sweatshirt over fitted yoga leggings for a retro look. The over-sized one below is from American Apparel.
Don’t forget the simple sexiness of a t-shirt in gym class. Showing off a fit body does not mean super-tight, stretchy fabric. Be a sporty goddess in soffes and a t-shirt like Regina George (Rachel McAdams) in Mean Girls. Sporting an old gym shirt might push you to climb the rope again, or not.
Also, wearing an ironic t-shirt like the one below updates the gym class ensemble. I love all giggle-inducing t-shirts from BUSTEDTEES. Both guys and girls can find awesome t-shirts there — this one says, “This is why I’m hot.”
Rain drizzle getting you down? Don’t miss a step with the right rain jacket for running or all other outdoor workouts. Even in dreary New York City, these two bride besties managed to keep in shape and dry in Bride Wars. With the right gear, these girls take to the city streets like a girl chasing a man holding a Tiffany’s engagement ring.
This fitted and bright white one from NIKE fits into any running wardrobe. Plus, it promises to be super lightweight.
A multitude of movies show fit girls and guys working out, and whether they are slacking or not their clothes always fit the part. So, next time you flick on your favorite film checkout what clothes play the role of Fit Fashion.
Drop that disposable water bottle (in the recycling bin) and pick up a resuable and HOT new stylish sipper.
Nathan Performance Gear makes BPA-free bottles that not only avoid landfills but keep you healthy in the sweltering heat, too.
My roomie uses her Nathan Sports water bottles at the gym, student teaching and even while cramming for tough exams. Keeping these bright, fun colors and designs by her side means it’s easy to keep her muscles and brain hydrated all day long.
Plus, the clips and fold in sip-straws prevent spills. Choose from metal or plastic as well as a variety of styles. What does your water say about you — environmental junkie, tough girl or minimalistic? There is a bottle to quench every style.
These cute bottles are hydrating forces not to be reckoned with, so sip away, divas!
Getting a professional blowout– who has the time?
My daily beauty concern revolves around making it from PING to Ellis in a span of five minutes while also crossing my fingers that the smell of fresh sweat radiating from my skin is not too (extremely) noticeable.
But here’s how dirty girls pull it off: the post-gym look.
Baby powder is limp hair’s best friend. It eats up grease faster than Paula Dean can utter “butter.” Sprinkle a little on your roots, bend over and let the Women’s Restroom hand dryer do all the work for you. It minimizes oil and releases the marks of pony-tail holder hair. (P-T.H.H. is even worse than hat hair, it leaves that extremely noticeable kink right where the elastic was sitting. No honey, calling this look “wavy” is a stretch.) Plus, that blowout mentioned earlier? Totally the poor girl’s trip to an Elizabeth Arden salon.
Next, wash your face, shoulders and back. Skip the full-on Bior skincare line and get a quick rinse. Hand soap is actually a great bacteria eater, some dermatologists suggest replacing it a few days a week for your formal face wash. This is in no way an excuse against showering after class, but it stops sweat from drying and clogging clean pores. I carry travel size makeup removing wipes. They are great for swiping over face, neck, back and even armpits.
Mini everything is perfect for plopping into letter bags, backpacks, purses and fanny-packs. I carry mini deodorant, oil-free face lotion, mascara and even St. Ive’s facial scrub for the most serious cleaning moments. No matter your favorite brand it most likely comes in a mini-me size. You can even find travel-size sets of these items at Target or WalMart, so no assembly required! Not a drugstore beauty kind of girl? Check out these higher-end items, here.
Anything you normally use can be made smaller and useful at the gym. Dry shampoo, hair brushes and most makeup items — bring whatever makesyou feel pretty.
Finally, change your shirt. Bring a spare and swap it out. Sweat is most noticeable when forming a back swamp on your t-shirt or tank. As gross as it sounds, rolling up a sweaty t-shirt and tucking it into your bag is easier than showing the world you did 3 miles on the treadmill. Let smooth thighs and a rockin’ body be the evidence, not a sweaty top. Besides, the cold sweat clinging to your back provides a breeding ground for bacne . . . gross!
Busy girls keep things going — don’t skip the gym because there is only an hour between class to spare. Go for it!
Despite the lack of springy weather, why not do a little spring cleaning?
That definitely does not bring out a ray of sunshine for most people, unless you are suffering from OCD and actually ENJOY cleaning. The good news is we’re talking about sifting through our fitness wardrobes–not your entire house– so, no broom required!
This week Fitness put out a step-by-step guide on replacing your workout gear.
Turns out all the science that makes fitness fabrics so impressive needs as much special care as our actual bodies do. Water repellent, cool gear, warm gear and any other special fabric can deter within months if washed with fabric softener. Also, hang-drying these items is best.
Check the tag for clues about fabric care, but most replacement comes down to frequency of use and type of material. Your spandex, if thrown into the wash nearly every week, won’t outlive the rotation of all fifty cotton t-shirts you own, one for each organization on campus, of course.
As far as the girls go, bras can live three months to a full year according to how often they’re washed and used. The article recommends doubling up on bras if one gets too weak and you’re not ready to trash it.
I could never part with my Victoria Secret sports bras. Call me girly, but they reach heavenly perfection.
How often do you wash a sports bra? Almost as often as you sweat in it. Warmer weather means more frequent washes. Fit Sugar recommends jumping into the shower and scrubbing your bra — yes, take it off first. That way you are not doing whole loads of laundry for one sports bra, and hand washing is better for bras anyways.
Other common pieces are yoga mats, exercise bands, weights, cardio machines and exercise balls. These may not be something you wear but they are just as important. Most are replaced as needed; look for holes, odors, cracks and yellowing. However, exercise balls CAN pop. Um, embarrassing! The more you shrink and blow up a ball the less it lives, so use caution and replace every one to two years.
T-minus 5 weeks til Hilton Head and counting … For those lucky students who will soon be hitting the sand while sipping Frosty Frogs it’s time to get in gear at the gym.
So while your’re blasting calories here’s a few pre-arranged outfits that are too cute to not workout! I clicked through pins on pins of “workout gear” to find a few of my favorite on Pinterest.
Here’s a great look for Ping classes or runners.
With those shades a gal will look cute just walking from A to B.
Now this pastel collection of calm pieces is perfect for classes like Yoga, Pilates or their cross-breed Yogalates. A friend of mine recently began stretching her athletic ability at Inhale Yoga, she says benefits include not only strengthening her core but lengthening her patience.
Do not be afraid to mix and match what you like, though, no one wants to be a walking billboard for any one sporting brand.
Plus no matter what you wear, music matters. I found the cutest way to hold your iPod while working it.
This knit iPod holder looks less intense than the typical black band used by most runners. Who says you have to look tough to act tough? Hit the gym your way, your style.
